Process and ExperimentationFor this piece, I began by picking a subject, I chose my friend little brother because of his size, he looked more aesthetically similar to the proportions of Magritte when he painted 'Son of Man', I then went to many different thrift stores to find a bowler hat to match the one Magritte is wearing as well as a coat or suit. I had to experiment with pinning the coat to make it look like it fit the subject, because the coat purchased was too big for the subject. There was little I could do about the arms of the coat, but I think it worked out in my favor with the execution of the piece, this could symbolize the fact that today's men aren't as brave as they used to be. We become cowards as we sit behind screens rather than go out and experience the world for ourselves. We rely on others to experience it for us and then report back to us about the world not allowing us to form our own opinions or perspectives. I took a lot of adjusting of the ISO settings on my camera to get the lighting the way I wanted in the photograph. I wanted it to look bright and whimsical to have more of a surrealist vibe while also having realist elements. I also had to take several photographs with the phone held in different positions to allow for the left eye of the subject to be peeping out just as Magritte had done in 'Son of Man'.
