Apotheoses
|
Exhibition
Apotheoses represent the two sides of women in media. Often time women are objectified and expected to be these sexual icons and expected to change themselves and be these false personas, when in reality women should be represented as strong and beautifully natural. |
Planning
My overall plan was the use the objectification of women as inspiration. At first I wanted to just showcase the negative side with a humorous edge. But a I was beginning this process I realized that my metaphor would not be as strong and would probably not be taken as serious, which as one can see this is a serious topic. One can clearly identify which of the images empowers women and which of the images is objectifying women.
Inspiration
My artist inspiration was Holley-Anne Buck. I focused mostly on her metaphors and meanings in her pieces. One of her pieces, 'Nice Rack' identifies the problem with women being sexualized and not being seen for who they truly are and how they should be represented which is also apparent in my pieces as well. I also looked at her other similar pieces such as 'Jamais Vu' and 'Orgasm Addict'.
Process
To start I grabbed a bunch of magazines that I thought would have objectifying images of women. I also decided to choose older magazines because they tend to have more objectifying images because as time went by people began to recognize a little bit of the obvious objectification of women but recently we've moved in a direction of being secretive and sneaky about these objectifications.
Experimentation
I experimented with different materials and magazines. I also experimented with filling in the negative space. I thought of what might be used to objectify women in the media so I decided to use makeup within the background of the piece considering that women are looked at as these objects that must alter their faces and bodies to be seen as beautiful.
Reflection
I believe that this this project still needs more, I plan to create a shadow box with these images in the background and then objects that represent these two sides. This piece comes across as slight novice and is not as intense as some of my other pieces. I believe that my metaphor was successful based on the images presented and the separation between the two compilations of images.
Critique
One can see the connection between Holley-Anne Buck's metaphor in her pieces and the metaphor's displayed in my piece. I add on to Buck's technique by creating how women should be represented in the media rather than just focusing on how they ARE represented in society in general. Instead of creating a human form I created a compilation, which is different from what Holley-Anne Buck did with her pieces, but still using the same material.
ACT Connection
1. The connection between the metaphor's in Buck's art is apparent in my art as well. I also used the same materials as my artist inspiration.
2. My artist has a very similar message to her pieces with women being treated as objects and not as people.
3. I discovered how cruel the media is and how it can sneakily change society's perception of people and things.
4. The central theme and idea of my research was the objectification of women in the media.
5. I made the inference that many media leaders act as though their industry is not objectifying which shows how sneaky these people are.
