Organic vs Industrial
Father Industry
|
Exhibition
Father Industry aims to represent our advancing technology and how the natural world needs to be conserved. The inspiration for Father Industry was Jason Chan's steampunk fashion line for the industrial side and Jess Riva Cooper's clay sculptures for the natural side. |
Planning
For my organic vs Industrial, I plan to have a mannequin head representing our society. I plan to have the mannequin head half steampunk and half organic materials like grass, flowers, vines etc. This is representing how our industry continues to advance and that as this occurs in society we loose touch with the natural world and are more immersed within these new industrial advances.
Inspiration
Jessica Chan, the creator of J Chan Fashion. She creates fashion not only for everyday use, but she uses her fashion to shine light upon issues in society such as depression, bullying, etc. Chan also created a steampunk fashion line for Steampunk Chronicle in which was my inspiration for the steampunk side of the mannequin's face. Chan plays with the unconventional and makes it beautiful. She often has loose and flowing dresses with a rustic vibe to them like in her Steampunk line. I used this steampunk line to provide an industrial look for my industry and technology side of the head.
I also was inspired by another artist by the name of Jess Riva Cooper. Cooper uses white figures and nature aspects within her pieces. Her medium used is primarily ceramic but she plays with different types of material based on the meaning behind her piece. I was inspired by one series in particular, called "Viral Series" This is where I got my inspiration for the nature side of the mannequin head.

Experimentation
I had to experiment with the kind of mannequin head used with my project. At first I wanted to use a mannequin head with the facial features included and colored skin and hair, but as I went to look for one I realized how expensive they were. After checking a few websites, I decided to look for a blank mannequin but had no luck. I finally decided to settle for a Styrofoam head and then paint the features and skin instead in order to save money and add my own spin on it. I had to really experiment with the placement of the different types of moss in order to keep the shape of the head. I placed the moss in several different places to see which composition would compliment the gentle but strong look I was going for on the nature side.
Process
The first step to creating this piece was getting the supplies, I went to Hobby Lobby and bought supplies relating to nature and industrial like things. Then I started by painting the mannequin head flesh tone on one side and a metallic silver spray paint on the other. I then began to use the materials to form the nature side first. I placed an eye shaped piece of moss onto the eye of the mannequin.
Reflection
Overall, this project was very exciting to do. I got to work with materials that I haven't worked with before. I feel my metaphor was successful not only because of the obvious connection between the nature and industry sides of the faces. I definitely see the obvious Industrial vs. Nature but it's hard to pick out my metaphor, which was: As our industry and technology advances, we loose touch with nature and the beauty of it.
Critique
I feel as though, you can easily pull out the influences from each of my artists. You can see the influences from Chan's Steampunk line within the mask on my piece. You can also identify the influence of Jessica Riva's line, "Viral"by showing nature on a face and inoporating nature into the structure of the face, which was always done on my piece.
ACT Reflection
1. One can see the influences of Cooper's facial reconstruction with nature.
2. My overall approach to this project was that as our technology advances we lose the beauty of nature.
3. I've made the generalization that humans are self entitled creatures, they think little about who or what they effect and more about how they will be affected.
4. The theme is the technological industry and it's impact on the natural world.
5. I can inference that little is being done about this issue, and that more economic choices are being made rather than environmental.
