Ataraxia
|
Ataraxia is meant to capture the complete calmness that one might feel at the beach, the sound of the waves and the sand in their toes. The inspiration of the curvature in my piece was famous architect, Frank Gehry.

Understanding your space and structure with meaning
1. How does your work create a relationship between land and water? It creates an emphasis to the lakefront by providing a path to the lake that draws people toward the lake.
2. What feelings will people have upon seeing, entering, walking through your structure? They will feel peaceful and feel like their walking through an actual portal to get to the lake.
3. How does your structure relate to our world physically as well as with our mind? The shapes in this structure resembles birds that are typically drawn in the distance of simplistic drawings.
4. How does your structure embrace the lake? My structure doesn't really embrace the lake as much as I'd like it to so I need to fix this and manipulate some of the pieces within the design.
5. How does your structure use the fundamental architectural components of path, portal, and place? My piece uses portal by creating different feelings before you enter, after you're inside and then the transformation to outside and seeing the wide open lake. My piece uses place much like portal with the different feelings depending on where you are around the piece. The path of this piece guides people through the piece and out to the ocean.
6. How does your structure embody meaning? With the way I manipulate people's feelings and how the structure represents birds.
7. What are 3 meaningful decisions made? I made one meaningful decision by using specific shapes as the structure. I made another when I decided how to place these pieces to create a feeling. A third meaningful decision made was in the creation of the height of the structure in order to A) not intimidate people and B) to be tall enough to partially enclose.

Process
The materials used were chipboard, glue, Xacto Knife different thicknesses of wood, water, cardboard, and black museum board. For the planning designs, I cut cardboard for the sand and glued it to the black board. I then used paper cut outs to start creating designs. After creating the experimental designs, I went with different materials. I used chipboard instead of cardboard to have cleaner edges. Then, I used wood for the actual designs. I wet the wood in order to manipulate the wood without breaking it. I then curved the wood around the inside of a bowl and then took it out 5 minutes later. At this point I could cut the board into what length I wanted and glue it onto my board.
Experimentation
For the experimentation, I tried many different lengths and compositions with my final three pieces, I tried have it be way shorter and it ended up looking too small for people to walk through.
