Planning
I wanted to take a picture where I feel I had looked pretty. I also needed to pick a picture that would have a background so I could transform the background into a Starry Night theme. I wanted to include my favorite art movement and my favorite artist to fill the background also. Instead of having the two different art styles clash, I decided to do the Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh in a pop art style, so there was stability throughout the entire piece.
Investigation
Pop art is included in my piece as well as van Gogh's starry night. Pop art is based a lot of the pictures in Times Square from neon signs, mass media, and even advertising from Britain and the United States. Pop art made everyday things into masterpieces, such as Roy Lichtenstein's Campbell Soup Cans. All of these reasons make Pop art my favorite art movement and thus I decided to use it for my self portrait. I also wanted to include a classical artists, so since this was a self portrait I decided to use my favorite artist, Van Gogh.
Process
To begin the process, I had to first choose a photo. Then I had to decide the composition of the photo on the canvas. After this I used a projector to project the image onto my canvas. While doing this, I traced my image with a pencil so that I had a guide to work off of and make sure everything was in proportion. After this I could begin painting. I painted the background dark navy blue first because I know my background was going to be dark anyway because of the night sky. I began to draw the mountain and then the sky in the background also. After I had finished the background, I then began to outline everything in a pop art style. Without the outlining it would not have given the full affect.
Experimentation
The first thing I experimented with was the art movement and the artists I was going to use. At first I wanted to do a Tim Burton-esque painting but I used the light table to trace three different pictures of my that I liked. The picture I wanted to use was unfortunately a selfie which I could not use. Therefore, I thought of many different options to change the area in which the phone was. I tried turning the phone into a camera because I love photography, but the fitting wasn't good. Then I wanted to do a hand and that's what I decided to go with because it fit best with the positing of everything.
Evaluation
Painting is a struggle for me and quite frankly I don't like it very much. My meaning of the piece was a direct reflection of me and my personality which based on how the picture came out it was successful. It showcases my favorite artist and my favorite art piece and it also showcases my favorite art movement, pop art.
Critique
Compared to the art movement pop art, my artwork corresponds greatly with the style. Thick black outlines, and bold solid colors are represented both in pop art and my artwork as well. I also can clearly identify the Starry Night painting by Van Gogh painted in a pop art style.
ACT Reflection
1) Van Gogh has always been one of my favoriter artists, so I knew by adding his piece "Starry Night" in the background of my portrait would be an accurate representation of me. I also took starry night, by my favorite artist and put it in the style of my favorite art movement.
2) The overall approach of Pop art is to take things that have been industrialized and create masterpieces out of them, to take inspiration from the neon signs in TImes Square and create bright and boldly colored pieces.
3) I realized that pop art wasn't just about creating normal things with crazy colors, but to advertise and create pieces that showcased the normal as beautiful.
4) The central idea around my research is me. I wanted to use aspects of art that would directly relate to me, since this was a self portrait of me.
5) I can infer that Pop art had been a very successful art movement since it is still used in advertising today and is now considered to be part of fine art.
